Camping Trip Tips

Here are some suggestions to help you enjoy all that a tent camper and the great outdoors have to offer. They are “tricks” or “short cuts” that we have found on our own trips using a tent trailer – or heard from guests who’ve regaled us with their stories about camping out West.

Enjoying the CampsiteFinding the Perfect Campsite

When looking for a place to pull up into, try to find a spot that gets a lot of sun in the morning (helps take the chill off and lets you get a little more time out of your battery), but is shaded from that direct afternoon sun.

Disconnecting

Disconnecting the camper from the tow vehicle can get interesting sometimes. If you find yourself in a situation where the” tongue” of the camper and the vehicle are facing down a hill, then block the tires of the camper, roll forward against the blocks, and then disconnect the coupler from the ball. Sometimes, you may need to use the hitch pin as lever to pry the coupler up so that the tongue will release from the ball.

Leveling the Camper

None of our units have levels. Instead, try using a water bottle, soda bottle or something similar. Open the door of the camper and set the partially filled plastic bottle on the floor. If you get the level of whatever fluid you are using to just above or below the label of the bottle, then voila, an impromptu level.

Throw Rugs

If you don’t like cold feet in the mornings, we suggest bringing a couple of small throw rugs as the linoleum can get cold on those crisp Rocky Mountain or Yellowstone nights.

A Good Night’s Sleep…

All of the beds in the campers are pretty comfortable, but, they are not Sleep Numbers or NASA-approved luxury foam quality. You might want to bring an extra comforter or bedspread to lay on top of the bed, then a sheet, then sleeping bags, and ohhh’ what a good night’s sleep you’ll have!

If your trip includes moving to different camp sites, when you are breaking camp down, you can pretty much leave the beds made, do not leave large pillows or a lot of linens on the beds, but a few is perfectly fine.
