Craig Poacher Sentenced

CRAIG, Colo. – A man from Craig has pleaded no contest to willful destruction of wildlife – a Class 5 felony – after an extensive investigation by Colorado Division of Wildlife officers revealed his part in a large poaching case.

Floyd Gutierrez, 63, was ordered to pay nearly $4,000 in fines and court costs by Moffat County District Court Judge Michael O’Hara. He was also order to make a $5,000 donation to Operation Game Thief, the non-profit organization that pays rewards to help solve poaching cases in Colorado. Gutierrez was also sentenced to four years of supervised probation and could have his hunting privileges permanently revoked pending a review by a Division of Wildlife hearing examiner. His supervised probation could be reduced to one year if he complies with court requirements.

“Shooting an animal and only taking the trophy parts is a very serious crime that is essentially stealing from all of the people of Colorado,” said Craig District Wildlife Manager Mike Swaro, who led the investigation. “Like this one, many of the cases we investigate come to us through tips from members of the public who are concerned about poaching.”

The case was initiated by a tip received by Swaro in November 2008 and culminated in a search of Gutierrez’s home and work shop early last year. During the search, investigators found hides, animal parts, antler racks, buckets filled with animal tissue, and meat stored in a freezer. DNA tests identified multiple animals and trophy parts but minimal meat harvested from those kills.

“This is one of the most egregious cases I’ve worked on so far in my career,” Swaro said.

Throughout the investigation, Gutierrez denied the charges, despite the DNA evidence proving that he had only a few pieces of meat from three mule deer bucks and two pronghorn bucks. “We’d gotten quite a few previous tips that raised our suspicions so it was good to finally get the pieces that brought this case to a successful close,” added Swaro.

Before his plea of no contest, Gutierrez had faced 11 other serious charges, including one count of aggravated illegal possession of wildlife. That particular charge could have added an additional $10,000 Samson law enhancer to Gutierrez’s fines.

The Samson law was passed by the state legislature in 1998 after a poacher’s small fines for illegally killing a well-known trophy elk in Estes Park stirred public outrage. It adds mandatory surcharges for poaching trophy game animals in addition to the normal fines. The added amounts range from $4,000 for a trophy-sized antelope up to $25,000 for a bighorn sheep.

Poaching continues to be a serious problem in Colorado and some people estimate that poachers may be taking nearly as many animals as legal hunters. The exact number of poaching incidents is impossible for authorities to pinpoint because poaching frequently occurs in remote areas.

“We encourage the public to call us, or Operation Game Thief, if they see or suspect poaching,” Swaro said. “Even though we may not be able to act on someone’s suspicion right away, we will keep the information and, as we did in this case, use it in the future when more pieces of the puzzle come to our attention.”

Since 1981, Colorado’s Operation Game Thief has received information on more than 2,400 poaching incidents, resulting in more than 700 convictions. These convictions have netted over $600,000 in fines and have resulted in the seizure of more than 1,300 illegally-taken animals. During this period, almost $130,000 in rewards has been paid to citizens who reported suspected illegal activity.

Man Sentenced in Moose Case

MEEKER, Colo. – A hunter from Highlands Ranch pleaded guilty April 1 to a felony and several misdemeanors in a case that highlights a growing concern for Colorado wildlife managers — hunters who fail to correctly identify big game animals.

After a three-month long investigation by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Joel D. Eady, 30, was charged with willful destruction of wildlife – a Class 5 felony, as well as hunting out of season, illegal possession of wildlife and failing to properly care for a harvested animal. The investigation showed that Eady failed to report the incident in a timely manner. This incident happened during a hunting trip in October 2010 in the Missouri Creek Basin, about 30 miles east of Meeker.

“The biggest concern here is that Mr. Eady never reported this to us,” said District Wildlife Manager and lead investigator Jon Wangnild. “We understand that mistakes happen and we will usually be more lenient with someone who reports an accident right away, but failing to report this incident turned a careless mistake into a felony.”

Following Eady’s guilty plea in Rio Blanco County District Court, Judge Gail Nichols sentenced Eady to three years of supervised probation and a $5,177 fine. The conviction means Eady may face a lifetime suspension of his hunting privileges pending a review by a Division of Wildlife Hearing Examiner.

According to witnesses, Eady admitted to them that he had mistakenly shot the cow moose after misidentifying it as an elk. He also told those at the scene that he would turn himself in, but never did.

“There is a tremendous amount of information and education about the proper identification of game animals available to hunters,” Wangnild said. “The Division has a great website where you can get as much information as you need to be a safe and legal hunter. A hunter should never, ever pull the trigger without being certain of the target. But if an accident occurs, the best thing to do is to let us know right away.”

Wangnild said some hunters may not be aware that moose may live in the same area where elk are found so the Division has conducted an extensive education and outreach program to help hunters distinguish between moose and elk, including letters and emails sent to hunters, and videos and illustrations that can be found on the Division’s website.

If a mistake does occur, hunters are encouraged to inform Division authorities immediately. In many cases, wildlife officers may use discretion in making determinations about the facts of a given case. If a hunter does not report an accident and abandons the animal, it can lead to serious charges and fines, as well as lifetime suspension of hunting privileges.

The Division reminds hunters that it is their responsibility to educate themselves as much as possible before hunting and encourage investing in a good pair of binoculars to help identify game. Using a rifle scope to identify game is strongly discouraged because it could create a situation where you may end up pointing your rifle at a person.

In poor light or thick cover, elk can be confused with moose. But on close examination, the differences are stark enough that anyone with basic knowledge of wildlife and a good pair of binoculars should be able to avoid mistaking one species for the other.

A bull moose has a large, dark brown or black body, a bulbous snout and a beard, or bell, under its throat. One of the most striking differences between a bull moose and a bull elk are its antlers. Bull moose have palmated or flattened antlers with tines, while a bull elk does not. The cow moose is similar in appearance to a bull minus the antlers.

A bull elk has a slender snout, pale yellow rump with darker legs, and chestnut brown neck. It has brow tines that grow off of the main antler beam. A cow elk is similar in appearance to a bull elk but also does not have antlers.

A moose calf can look very similar to an antlerless elk, so using binoculars is critical to identify other distinguishing characteristics.

Callers to Operation Game Thief do not have to reveal their names or testify in court. A reward of $500 is offered for information on cases involving big game or endangered species, while $250 is offered for information on turkey and $100 for fishing and small game cases. Rewards of up to $1,000 are available for information about flagrant violations. Rewards are paid for information which leads to an arrest or a citation being issued.

Camping In Bear Country

SALIDA, Colo. - The Colorado Division of Wildlife reminds campers to be “bear aware” when enjoying the outdoors.

The most important tip for all campers is to keep a clean campsite to avoid attracting bears or other wildlife.

Bears go into campgrounds because food is often available around tents, camp trailers and dumpsters. The potential for conflicts increases when food brings bears and humans into close contact.

“Bears are built to eat and their sense of smell is incredible,” explained Ron Dobson, a district wildlife manager in the Salida area. “They can smell food from miles away, they’ll travel to find it and that’s when they get into trouble.”

In a natural setting, bears would just as soon avoid people, but bears that learn to associate humans with food begin to lose their natural fear of people. “Food conditioned” bears can become aggressive and often end up being euthanized.

Dobson says black bears are not naturally aggressive toward humans, but are actually very shy creatures.

“However, bears are on a mission to find food,” he explained. “Campers need to take precautions to avoid problems for themselves, for nearby campers and the next people who use the same camp site.”

He suggests campers never leave food or garbage behind and always pack out their trash.

Here are a few other tips for campers in bear country:
* Keep a clean site and clean up thoroughly after every meal;
* After grilling, allow the fire to completely burn food scraps and grease off the grill.
* Do not eat in your tent or keep food or items that smell of food in your tent;
* Store unused food and garbage in secure containers out of the reach of bears and away from your sleeping area;
* Secure pet food as you would human food.
* Don’t leave food that would attract birds or any wildlife in campgrounds. If you see others in the campground feeding wildlife, contact the campground host.
* If you see a bear in a campground, report it to the local DOW office as soon as possible.
* If you come in close contact with a bear, talk to it firmly and make yourself look as large as possible. Back away slowly, but do not run.
* Teach children and others who might be unfamiliar with bears about bear safety.

Why your Japanese made vehicle needs a 7 way round wiring connector

The most common reason for delays we have in getting customers started on their trip is improper vehicle wiring. All of the camper rentals we offer have a seven way round wiring connection. This is a very common type of wiring connector for any RV. We strongly recommend that customers have this type of wiring connector properly installed on their vehicle to ensure a trouble free start to your trip. If you have a Japanese made vehicle, particularly Honda or Toyota, it is critical you install this type of connector.

Why is this so important? First some explanation as to the difference in American vs Japanese vehicles in terms of wiring. Many Japanese cars will come with a wiring connector known as a four way flat, four pins in a row, one encased in plastic, three other bare pins. Although we have adapters to convert this type of connector to the 7 way round on the campers, our experience is that with Honda and Toyota, the success rate of these adapters is only about 50%.

The reason is that American made cars have a tail light bulb with two filaments, one for brakes, the other for turn signals. Japanese cars have two separate bulbs, one for each purpose. When a trailer light connector is installed on a Japanese vehicle, a converter is installed on the vehicle to bring these two wires down to one wire for both left and right tail/brake lights. The charge has to travel through the vehicle, through the converter, then through the adapter, and finally, back 15 to 20 feet to the rear of the camper. This requires a fairly strong charge, and this in turn requires significant electrical ground capability for the trailer light connection to your vehicle. A four way flat connector simply does not have enough grounding capability to make this work. What happens if your vehicle does not have sufficient grounding capability to operate the lights on the camper? First we can’t let you take the camper off our lot, it is against the law. Second, you have to find a mechanic somewhere who is willing to drop their other work to re-wire your vehicle. If you decide to cancel, there is no refund, you would be cancelling without notice, we have virtually no chance of re-renting the camper, and in general we can’t be responsible for making sure your vehicle is tow ready. A very bad way to start your vacation.

Please have a 7 way round wiring connector installed on your vehicle to ensure a trouble free start to your trip. One note, the 7 way round plug offers the capability of having a trailer brake controller and charge line installed on your vehicle. If you are renting a tent camper from us, you do not need either one of these optional items. Most of our campers are equipped with trailer brakes, but you need an electronic controller on your vehicle to make them function. In Colorado and Wyoming, you are not required to have trailer brakes unless your trailer ways more than 3000 lbs., none of our tent campers do. The travel trailers do exceed this weight limit, and you are required to have an electronic controller on your vehicle if you are renting a travel trailer. Trailer brakes are a very good safety feature, but one that is not required. The charge line will charge your camper battery as you drive down the road. We provide the camper with a fully charged battery, you won’t add any charge going on your trip, only on the way home.

Yellowstone Camping

Yellowstone is far and away the most popular destination for our customers, and is the reason we have recently opened a location in Jackson, WY (Jackson Hole) to serve these customers. If you are planning on a Yellowstone camper rental, hopefully the information below can help plan your trip. Before I start though, let me offer one piece of good advice. Many customers have their focus on Yellowstone, and ignore its neighbor, Grand Teton National Park. Please include Grand Teton in your plans. From our location in Jackson, you drive through Grand Teton to get to the South entrance of Yellowstone. I am a Colorado native, I’ve seen plenty of scenic mountains in Colorado, but Grand Teton is absolutely spectacular. To travel all the way to this part of the country and not see the Tetons would be a shame.

The first question we are asked a lot is can you bring a tent camper to Yellowstone. The answer is absolutely yes! There is quite a lot of mis-information on this subject, so don’t be mislead. There is one campground in Yellowstone, Fishing Bridge, which allows only hard sided travel trailers and motorhomes. This is also the only campground in Yellowstone which has full electrical and water hookups. ALL other campgrounds in Yellowstone allow tent campers. By the way, of all the campgrounds, Fishing Bridge is my least favorite. It is not particularly scenic, has very close accommodations to your neighbors, and in general has the ambience of camping in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Some campgrounds in Yellowstone allow customers to make advance reservations, others do not. It is probably a good idea to make reservations for the first day of your trip in case you arrive late in the day, or you arrive on a weekend. The National Park service can give you good information on which non-reservable campgrounds fill up quickly to help plan your trip. The Yellowstone information phone is 307/344-7381.

Mammoth Springs –open all year, one of the most wondrous of all the unusual sites in Yellowstone.

Madison-my favorite campground in Yellowstone, very beautiful setting on the Madison River, close to Firehole River, many of the geyser basins and Old Faithful.

Tower Fall-Near the Lamar Valley, home to massive herds of buffalo, elk and the grizzlies and wolves which stalk them. Opens 5/20/11.

Slough Creek and Pebble Creek-In the heart of the Lamar Valley-wolf country. Slough Creek opens 5/27, Pebble Creek 6/6.

Indian Creek- Nearby access to Mammoth Hot Springs and Obsidian Cliff, two of the most unusual sites in Yellowstone. Opens 6/6.

Canyon-at the top of Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, nearby access to the upper and lower falls of the Yellowstone. Opens 6/3.

Lewis Lake-the first campground you arrive at from the south (Jackson) entrance. Very scenic with lots of hiking trails nearby.

Bridge Bay and Grant Village- on Yellowstone Lake. Bridge Bay opens 5/27, Grant Village 6/21.

How to tow a trailer

Many of our customers have never towed a trailer before and have questions about safe towing tips. Here are a few.

The number one tip is to simply slow down. Towing a trailer requires your vehicle to work harder, particularly at altitude in the mountains. Change your expectations when you are towing. You won’t be able to tow a trailer up the approaches to Eisenhower Tunnel (Continental Divide) at 80 mph; don’t even try. If you are going 45-50 up a steep mountain grade, you are doing fine. Obviously the bigger and stronger your vehicle is, the better it will tow, but be easy on your vehicle in any case. Slow down, keep your RPM’s at a reasonable level, 3000-4000. Whatever speed that is, be happy with. This advice is even more applicable when going downhill. Control your speed going downhill on a steep grade to around 60-65, even on an interstate highway. If you are on a lesser road, slow down further.

To help control your speed and be easier on your vehicle, be prepared to downshift; even if you have an automatic transmission. If your car is equipped with overdrive (sometimes called ‘economy’ mode) turn it off while you are towing, even on flat ground. Towing a trailer is not the time to try to improve your fuel economy, turning off overdrive gives your vehicle’s transmission more torque, much easier for it to tow. When you are climbing a steep hill, shift your transmission to a lower gear, don’t simply depend on your automatic transmission, actively downshift. Keep an eye on your RPM’s; every vehicle is different, but generally you want to keep your RPM’s around 2500-3500. If your RPM’s while climbing are below 2000, you need to shift down, above 4000, either slow down or shift up.

This advice is truly critical when going downhill. Shift down to a lower gear and let your engine and transmission help to control your speed. If you begin to move too fast, continue shifting down a gear. You want to avoid continually riding your brakes down a steep hill. This will not only cause increased brake wear on your vehicle, but more importantly can lead to overheated brakes. This condition is very dangerous, and can lead to complete brake failure. When you apply your brakes, do so vigorously; get your speed sharply reduced, shift your transmission down to help control speed, and then release your brakes to keep from overheating. It is critical to control your speed going downhill, no more than 60-65 mph even on the best of roads. Going faster than this can cause the trailer to begin swaying. This is also a very dangerous condition. Slowing down is the primary preventative measure.

The other issue to realize about towing is that you need to make wider turns than normal. The trailer will turn sharper than your vehicle, so if you are making a right hand turn, or just turning around an obstacle like a fence post or post at a gas station, turn very wide. On a right turn, don’t try to turn from the right hand lane to the right hand lane. Pull farther into the intersection, turn into the second lane. When turning (or passing) make routine use of your mirrors. Verify that your trailer tire has cleared the obstruction before beginning your turn.

S’Mores -Like you need another reason to go camping!

One of my favorite things about camping is being around a campfire, and where there’s a campfire, there’s bound to be the makings for s ‘mores.

Needed Items:

unwound wire hangers/camp forks/ clean sticks

marshmallows

graham crackers

chocolate bars (optional: peanut butter cups)

campfire

break graham crackers into two halves and place one quarter of a chocolate bar or a peanut butter cup (my personal favorite) on one half of the graham cracker
stick one marshmallow on a camp fork
hold marshmallow inches over the hot embers of the campfire, rotate the camp fork, allowing the marshmallow to become lightly browned all over
place browned marshmallow on top of the graham cracker and chocolate
place the other half of the graham cracker on top of the marshmallow, creating a sandwich
wait about 30 seconds until the warm marshmallow melts the chocolate
ENJOY!! Of course you are going to want s ‘more…so repeat the steps again!

How To Back a Trailer

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is from customers who may not have much experience in backing up a trailer. Admittedly, this is a learned skill, kind of like riding a bike. Many campgrounds have ‘pull through’ campsites. If you don’t want to learn how to back a trailer, this is a good option, look for a site with a pull through, you don’t have to go backwards.

Backing a trailer is not difficult however, and with a few minutes of practice before you leave our lot, you can master this skill and be able to brag to your friends! You may even have a cheering section. We had a family from France vacationing in the US who picked up a trailer on Memorial Day Friday. This is a very busy day for us, and after all of our customers are gone, we often have a couple of cold ones with all of our staff. The visitors picked up late in the day, we gave them a bit of instruction, and then they wanted to practice in our lot before leaving. As the wife began to become more proficient at this new skill, our staff would erupt in loud cheering. Everybody had a good laugh, and then our new friends got on their way.

Probably the first decision is what position you prefer; facing forward and using your mirrors, or turning around to look out your back window. There is not a right or wrong answer to this question, just whatever is comfortable to you. To begin, give yourself a good chance to be successful. Pull your vehicle straight ahead so that the vehicle and the camper are lined up straight with each other. Try to pull ahead so that you are angled in the general direction you want to back the trailer. If you start with the camper crooked, you make the difficulty in backing up much greater. Next, make sure that you have a spotter behind the camper to help guide you and warn you of obstructions such as rocks, trees, posts, etc. One trick I always teach is to place your steering hand on the bottom of your steering wheel. If you want the end of the trailer to move to the left, simply move your steering hand to left. Begin backing up slowly, move your steering hand and begin to get a feel to how sharply or quickly the trailer reacts to your steering movement. The trailer will normally turn more sharply than the vehicle will.

If the trailer begins to turn sharply, more than you wish, this is a condition called ‘jackknifing’. Simply shift your vehicle back to forward, pull ahead and straighten out again. You cannot back through a jackknife position and get the trailer straightened out; you must stop and pull forward. If you continue to try backing up, you will most certainly do damage to both the camper and your vehicle. Just be patient, pull forward to straighten out, and try again. After a few attempts you will begin to get a feel for how the camper reacts to your steering. With a bit of practice, you will develop a new skill quickly. The main keys; begin with vehicle and camper straight, go slow, have patience. Kind of like riding a bike.

Finding the perfect camping spot

Most avid campers are sitting around right now waiting for camping season to arrive. Prior planning can never start too soon. Ask for time off from work now, look at holiday weekends and add a couple of days before and after so you can arrive before the crowd and leave after the mad dash home. Make your reservations for camper rentals, or even campsites. Decide what type of campground you will need, either with hookups for water and electric or primitive campsites. Or maybe you just want to find someplace away from the crowds. No matter what your perfect camping scenario is, start now.

Finding the perfect camping spot is not always as difficult as you may think. Most are only an hour or two from your home. Start looking as soon as you can, doing some searching can possibly find you the best camp site ever that you can enjoy year after year.

Begin by doing some research on the internet, maybe grab a topography map of the area or stop by the US Forest Service and grab some brochures. Something I like to do is take a weekend drive when the weather warms up. Here in Colorado we have had many nice weekends in the past few months. Pack up the car and head out, but also be prepared. Remember to bring extra clothes; 3 days worth of water and food, you never know what can happen in the high country no matter what time of the year. Always remember to tell someone where you are headed.

Next, pack up the family and head out for nice drive. All you need to know is what direction you are heading. Your trip can be to check out some campgrounds or just some forest access roads. Early in the season a lot of these may be closed but some are open, either way it gives you an idea of where you may want to spend your vacations.

Dispersed area camping, is an option available throughout most of the Forest. You may camp outside of developed campgrounds in most parts of the Forest, at no cost. This is how I like to camp, in the wilderness surrounded by wildlife not wild parties. Take a drive early in the year to find a great meadow, babbling brooks, small streams or aspen groves. Mark your route and take some notes, get out of the car and take a walk around see if it has easy access and some level spots to camp. Perhaps you and the family can have a picnic. If you don’t find anything the first weekend, don’t worry, there will be more weekends to take a ride. Once you find a few areas you like, visit them again once camping season starts, usually a week or two before Memorial weekend. See if anyone else is camping around the area. Ask some questions, see if they like the area. Check back again after camping season is in full swing, look to see if there has been a lot of traffic, is there trash left around, does the area become filled with people on the weekends, or does it seem to remain quiet and clutter free. If it turns out to not be a place you want to camp, continue looking.

Some like to camp around others, some like to camp away from crowds and others want all the amenities they can get, no matter what your needs are, there is a spot for you. Take the time to start looking now, it will save a lot of frustration and stress when it comes time for that weekend getaway.

Yellowstone Wildlife

Yellowstone National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife. This wide variety helps to sustain the delicate ecosystem that is Yellowstone. The wildlife of the park includes grizzly bear, black bears, wolves, coyotes, bison, bighorned sheep, moose, elk, deer, and birds.

There are about 300 grizzlies that live in and around Yellowstone. What many people do not know about grizzly bears is that they do not really hibernate; they go into a semi-dormant state, often wandering outside in periods of milder weather. Male grizzlies can weigh between 500 and 1000 pounds, while females can weigh between 330 to 700 pounds. In the spring a grizzly bear’s favorite meal is a baby elk calf. In the summer their diet consists of the seeds of whitebark pines, moths, marmots, squirrels, and carrion left by other animals. Grizzlies typically have brown fur with whitish tips. They have a pronounced muscular hump on their shoulders that distinguishes them from black bears. This muscular hump gives strength to their front limbs for digging and running; they can attain speeds of 35 mph. Grizzlies are likely to be found near Mount Washburn in Hayden Valley, near the Fishing Bridge, and outside of the East Gate.

Black bears are not always black; they can be cinnamon, blond, or brown. Their rumps are higher than their shoulders and they lack the muscular hump that grizzlies have. Black bears, like grizzlies, are omnivores. There is an estimated 500 to 600 black bears inhabiting Yellowstone Park. They can be found most anywhere in Yellowstone, mostly between Tower and Mammoth Hot Springs, and in the Lamar Valley along the Madison and Firehole Rivers.

In March 1995, grey wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park after they had been trapped and killed off about 70 years ago. Grey wolves range in color from coal black to snowy white. They look very similar to German Shepherds with longer legs, narrower chests, and bigger feet. Grey wolves pursue a variety of prey: moose, deer, sheep, and more often elk. They can be seen in the Lamar Valley between Mammoth and Cooke City. The best viewing time is early morning when it’s still dark.

The Coyotes in Yellowstone are among the largest in the United States, the average adult weighing between 30 and 40 pounds. They can be grey or tan with a reddish tint. Coyotes can be seen alone or in packs, however, they are capable of killing large prey when working together. They can be seen in open spaces in the Hayden and Lamar Valleys.

Bison are the largest mammals that inhabit Yellowstone, they can be 6 feet tall at the shoulders; the bulls weighing up to 1800 pounds and the cows up to 1000 pounds. The Yellowstone Park bison are the only population of wild bison, in the lower 48 states, that have persisted since prehistoric times. Bison are nomadic grazers, roaming grassy plateaus in the summer and spending the winter near warm thermal pools or in the northern part of the park. Specifically, they can be found in the Hayden Valley along the Yellowstone, Madison, Gibbon, and Firehole Rivers. Lone bulls can often be seen around the Lake Hotel and the Fishing Bridge.

Bighorn sheep are light brown to greyish or dark chocolate brown, with a white rump and lining of the back legs. The males or rams have large curved horns; they can be seen battling for control of the harem. The males get a running start and crash head first into each other, resulting in a sound similar to a rifle shot. The females or ewes have short, slightly curved horns. Bighorn sheep graze on grasses and browse shrubby plants. They have adapted to climbing steep terrain, seeking cover from their predators. They can be found in the Gallatin, Washburn, and Absaroka Ranges.

Moose are the largest members of the deer family; the cows weigh up to 800 pounds and the bulls up to 1300 pounds. They are dark in color ranging from brown to black. The bulls produce large palmate antlers which are shed annually. Both the bulls and cows have a growth of skin and hair that hangs down from the throat, called a dewlap. Moose are solitary animals, most likely to be seen in streams, marshes, and willow thickets along the road between Norris and Mammoth Hot Springs.

Elk are the most abundant large animal in Yellowstone and have had a presence in the area for over 1,000 years. They are reddish brown with heavy, dark colored manes, and a yellowish rump patch. Elk are the second largest member of the deer family; the cows weighing 500 to 525 pounds and the bulls 600 to 800 pounds. Mature bulls have antlers that may have 6 to 8 points weighing more than 30 pounds. More than 30,000 elk summer in Yellowstone. Elk are very social creatures and can be seen in herds year-round. Elk are most commonly seen in Gardiner just outside the North Gate, at Canyon Village, near Old Faithful, and in the meadows from Mammoth to Norris.

Mule deer can be seen just about anywhere, especially in areas with sage brush. Commonly known as “muleys,” they were named by Lewis and Clark for their large mule-like ears. Mature bucks typically have double fork antlers that are high and wide, while the young bucks have single, spike-like antlers or small single-forked antlers.

Peregrine Falcons reside in Yellowstone from April through October and are believed to winter in Mexico. They nest on high cliffs that overlook rivers or valleys. Peregrine Falcons prey on songbirds and waterfowl and have been clocked at speeds exceeding 200 mph swooping after prey. They can be recognized by their blue-grey bodies, black helmet, brown bill, white breast, and black under wings.

Bald Eagles reside in the park throughout the year. They nest in large trees near water, in the summer they can often be seen around Yellowstone Lake. Bald Eagles can be recognized by their dark bodies, white head feathers, and large wing spans, some up to 7 feet. In the late fall and early spring, Bald Eagles scavenge carcasses of elk and bison that have died.

Please remember that any wildlife is supposed to be just that, wild. Enjoy these animals at a safe distance, so that they may remain part of Yellowstone’s natural beauty. If animals have repeated contact with humans they may become a danger, not only to humans but to themselves. Help keep Yellowstone wild.
