It’s time for a vacation, finally—and you’ve decided to hire a camper and hit the road. But what are all of your options when it comes to trailer vs. camper travel, pop-up vs. hard-sided campers, and RV rentals? Colorado camper dealers can offer you everything under the sun.
What kind of vehicle is right for your trip?
Below are descriptions of the different types of recreational vehicles (RVs) available to you as a consumer. Consider them when you’re wondering about RV vs. travel trailer vs. pop-up trailer…what are the advantages and disadvantages of your many choices?
Motorhome
Motorhomes are often called “RVs” although all of the recreational vehicles below can be classified as such. The largest RVs, they include a gas- or diesel-powered engine, either as a separate cab or built into a bus-style vehicle. Motorhomes range from including only basic amenities to the luxury models which are, very literally, homes with motors.
Motorhomes have the disadvantage of not having a separate vehicle which can be used for driving locally, and the size and utility requirements of these RVs usually infringes upon your flexibility as a traveler. However, one advantage is that the RV’s amenities are usable while in motion, which is not true of trailers. The motorhome RV is usually the most expensive RV option when renting or buying, particularly when you also consider fuel economy.
Hard-Sided Travel Trailer
A travel trailer contains many of the amenities that motorhomes do, but requires a powerful tow vehicle. They range from more compact models to those over 30 feet long, and most often contain toilets and showers.
Adventure Camper offers the Viking Grand Haven X-24 hard-sided travel trailer.
Fifth Wheel Trailer
These trailers are mainly used by long-term campers or those living out of their RV. Boasting the most space for trailer length, Fifth Wheel Trailers can have varying numbers of appliances and amenities. They most often require larger towing vehicles like heavy-duty pick-up trucks.
Truck Camper
The truck camper becomes a cost-effective choice for those who already own a pick-up. The camper sits on top of the bed of the truck. Space and amenities are very limited, but the vehicle does have a maximum amount of flexibility.
Park Models
For RVers who plan to stay in one place for a season, the park models are made to be “parked,” and most often include all the amenities of a small home.
Pop-Up Tent Trailer
The lightest of RVs for a vehicle to tow, and therefore the best fuel economy, and all the comforts of home while still enjoying a camping experience—the pop-up RV is Adventure Camper’s specialty. Pop-ups offer a level of comfort that is worlds away from a camping tent, yet with the proximity to nature that is so often missing from travel in other RVs. Small stoves, sinks, furnaces, showers, and spacious sleeping room are standard for most tent campers.

Why we love a pop-up tent camper
|
We are often asked by potential customers about RV vs. travel trailer camping.
The real beauty of staying in a tent camper is that unlike living in an RV, you and your family still experience the wonder of living outdoors.
At night you can hear the whistle of wind through the pines—it’s nature's own sleeping pill after a long day of hiking, fishing or biking. When morning breaks in the mountains, you can hear nature coming to life as the blue jays, chipmunks and other
small animals begin their day. You can open up the full picture windows in the camper to let the morning light and the fresh air flood in, see the spectacular scenery around you, and if you’re lucky and quiet, perhaps the kids will see a small herd of deer or elk grazing in the meadows or between the trees.
Though we have had countless opportunities to become RV dealers, we’ve chosen to specialize in what we feel brings our customers the most satisfaction when it comes to their adventures—pop-up camper trailers! Here are some reasons why:
1. Portability – Let’s face it, an RV on the highway takes up a lot of room. Unwieldy vehicles, RVs are more difficult to park, more difficult to drive, and often don’t offer much more comfort and room than camper trailers. Plus climbing the Rockies is a bear!
Pop-up tent campers are easy to handle for first-time users, and perfect for quick, portable getaways.
2. Cost Efficiency – Not only is hiring a pop-up camper less expensive than an RV, the money saved on gas is significant. Tent trailer prices and photos will prove—you don’t lose on comfort and space with a camper trailer, and the price for your trip can’t be beat.
Hire a camper trailer and beat out RVs on cost efficiency—by a lot.
3. Flexibility – Go places you couldn’t in an RV; you’d be surprised how many there are. A pop-up camper is easy to tow, so you can camp in areas that RVs aren’t allowed. Best yet you still have your vehicle available for running errands, sight seeing and side trips. National parks, lakes, mountains…the Rocky Mountains are yours.
A camper trailer is a quick way to get away…to all the nooks and crannies of the wild world.
While relaxing in your camper, you will be able to smell the pines and the fresh air around you. All of our units have extra fine 18 mesh screening on the windows—plenty of ventilation, but the mosquitoes will have to go elsewhere for their meal! Enjoy lunch under your awning in the cool shade, or just sit and look at the view.
In a camper, you are not insulated from nature as you are in an RV; you are part of it. The sounds of the outdoors are not drowned out by the portable television and microwave, or the large generator used to run those things.
When you’re considering RV vs. travel trailer vacations, consider this:
Pop-up trailers enable you and your family to be as close as possible to nature, while still enjoying comfort that’s a long way from “roughing it” in a tent.
Why we love Viking® Campers |
The majority of the campers we hire and sell are made by Viking—but we’ve had experience with other models. Why have we chosen Viking? And why should you be concerned about the brand of camper you’re hiring?
Viking has been one of America's leading tent trailer manufacturers since the 1970's. Offering full-featured campers at very reasonable prices, Viking offers some of the best values in the industry. Viking takes a more simple approach to the design of their campers than some other manufacturers, and in many cases, simple can be better.
1. Ease and Speed of Set-up
- Viking's simple lift system is easy for anyone to crank up, and provides trouble-free service.
- Set-up time is around 10 minutes, probably less.
2. Comfort
- Vinyl tent fabric with storm cuffs is waterproof and sheds rain off the camper.
- Insulated bed ends and the largest furnace in the industry—warmth during even the coldest conditions.
- Powered roof vent for fresh air ventilation.
- Extra thick mattresses.
3. Price and Value
- Great prices for a full-featured camper.
We’ll continue to feature Viking as our primary camper trailer manufacturer as long as they continue to offer quality products at competitive prices—and as long as our customers return from their trips with ear to ear smiles on their faces! |
